Candle Cafe, Central Park + Rooftop Fun in NYC

12 Jun

I’m quite behind on NYC storytelling, so it’s time to back it up 2 weeks to a holiday Monday that Blair, best friend Joe and I enjoyed. NYC gets better by the second as days warm and patios open - how will we ever leave?

That Monday was too hot for outdoor eating though (we were a sweaty bunch!), and I was thrilled when the guys humored my suggestion to go vegan in the Upper West Side at Candle Café. This is round 2 of ‘the Boys and Linds go Vegan’, first time being late dinner at Candle Café’s ritzier counterpart in the Upper East Side, Candle 79. Success!

From website: Candle Café is dedicated to bettering the health of the individual and the planet by serving food fresh from farm to table. Our organic vegan cuisine is rooted in sustainability, eco-friendly practices, local farming and compassion for animals.

To start,
we shared guacamole and nachos (thanks to Joe’s detective ears, as it wasn’t listed on the menu):

Then Blair and I both chose the Indian special – filling, savoury & divine! I’ll be trying to duplicate the tomato/sweet potato concoction at home:

I still snuck a bite of Joe’s Mediterranean wrap – the kalamata aioli paired with it had perfect tang and was a great, fresh choice for such a hot day:

We spent the next hour walking through Central Park to plop down in this bikini-clad, jersey’s-off section (I missed the memo) listening to country music from my iTouch. Blair’s been shedding a few tears at the lack of country radio signals in NYC:

There was some football throwing, but eventually things just got too hot to handle, so we trekked the 5 minutes back to Joe’s apartment to plan for our rooftop BBQ (cue when I start to feel like a real New Yorker, even though I appear to be half asleep and I’m pretty sure Joe IS asleep):

In case you’re wondering, I had a bean burger. :)
Perfect simplicity as the sun sets over a hot NY day.

Ugh I LOVE Candle Cafe! And NYC. If only it didn’t get cold there…or if I had more vegan options here.

haha where are you now? I’m definitely loving the veggie culture in NYC although I’m not a strict follower of the diet ;)

Florida…I’d never move but I have few easily accessible vegan choices…so I have to make them myself, and I’m lazy. But I DO love to visit the Big Apple. It’s probably about time for another trip.

Yay! My sister will be in Brooklyn this summer and I hope to get there in July or August. This made me excited!

Candle Cafe is amazing! If you’re still in NY for a while check out Blossom Cafe at 466 Columbus Avenue. It’s another amazing vegan restaurant.

I will do that for sure – we have another few weeks left. Appreciate the recommendation!
