Songs on Sunday: dave matthews on love, life + world change

2 Dec Dave Matthews Band

Hello lovelies! I wasn’t sure if I could post a Songs on Sunday in time, but here it is, right in the knick of it! We’ve had 2 lovely house guests all week and I had some chores to get caught up on since their departure. Excuses, excuses, listen to me.

I have exciting news: New Jersey hosted my first Dave Matthews Band concert on Friday night!  Minus our upper bowl seats and the 20-year old punk on the shuttle bus’ vehement complaints about it being the worst Dave show ever, I’ve managed to resurface a significantly bigger fan than before (and the fact that 100% of the proceeds were donated to Hurricane Sandy relief certainly helped).

The tickets were gifted from and enjoyed with the 2 lovely guests mentioned above, my good high school friends, Lisa & Justin. We totalled 2 and half hours of transit (that’s two ways of 2 NYC subway trains, a New Jersey Transit train and a concert bus) to witness 2 and a half hours of incredible talent. Was it worth it? Duh. Not even our nose bleed seats could take the candy away from our ears. Highlights for me were Dave’s euphonious voice, drummer Carter Beauford’s contagious smile that I caught on the big screen numerous times and violinist Boy Tinsley’s insane jamming.

They really stuck to the new album, adding in a few classics like Two Step, Dancing Nancies, Don’t Drink the Water and The Space Between. Though I was hoping for more old shizz, I’ve since had the new tracks on repeat and really love them. I can’t help but fall head over heels for many of their themes like peace, appreciating the little moments in love & life and being conscious of what’s happening in the world around us.

It prompted me to spend Saturday morning sifting through their discography for these re-occuring themes; if you’re moved by the same things, you will love this playlist!

Songs on Sunday: New York, I Love You

4 Nov

Have you heard?
We’re going back to NYC!
YEEEEAAAAH!

New York Selfie
I’m thrilled to get back to the Big Apple, City That Never Sleeps, Empire City, Gotham – you name it! That place really is the pulse of something so much larger than life. This time, living right in Manhattan for almost 2 months, I’m antsy to explore certain neighbourhoods more frequently and thoroughly than was possible before from our very distant Brooklyn ‘hood. Watch out used book stores, vegan restaurants, yoga studios and cafes I’m coming for ya!

Blair arrives today, evading Hurricane Sandy by a week and I’ll head in next Sunday after a pitstop to Halifax. The landlord says it’s good timing as power just came back to the apartment yesterday. Fingers crossed the subway is powered up for his commute to the hospital tomorrow. I know the city that seems indestructible is still recovering from the aftermath of mother nature. Linden, Director of Pravassa (the wellness company I intern for) has been updating every so often including posting this photo of the Brooklyn Bridge without power on the New York side. Cool shot!

Brooklyn Bridge a few days after Hurricane Sandy

The last time we were in New York, I spent many bus and subway rides next to Brooklynite (Marine Park) ladies commuting to their Financial District jobs. One woman, with tears in her eyes, described a morning commute to work 10 years ago. She was running late and so, once she had phone signal over the Manhattan bridge, she called her boss. “Sonia, get home. Don’t come to work.” he sternly told her. A few of her co-workers who had arrived on time weren’t so fortunate. The twin towers had literally just been hit. Public transport was about to be shut down. People walked hours to get back to home but they banded together, happy to help each other get through, happy to be alive.

Now, after hearing some of the stories from this past hurricane, I think the city has a similar sense of unity. I’m not taking anything away from the gravity of these such events, but it is a time to snap us back into our oneness. Yes, New York is a huge city. No, most people there aren’t heartless like my small city ignorance once expected. I was pleasantly surprised to have great conversations with unexpected bystanders and I truly thank Sonia for sharing her story with me last June.

This week’s playlist reflects all of my excitement for a city that can get through anything. A place most of the world either loves, or dreams of, where I’ll gratefully get to spend another 2 months exploring. Visit?

Song of the day: halloween

31 Oct

Oh I forgot to say Happy Halloween, ya’ll!

It really doesn’t feel like the 31st here. I’m alone in our cottage tucked away in the woods. Now that I’ve just written that though, it sounds like the beginning of a real life halloween story…eeeks!

Any of you dress up this year?

Enjoy:
